Media Over Blows Protests

By Andy Nevis

If you were listening to the vast majority of the mainstream media today, you would have thought that the world ground to a halt when Illegal immigration activists cut school and work today.

For example, KCRA spent probably a good one half to two thirds of their 6PM news hour discussing the protests.  They treated it nearly as extensively as they would an election, sending one of their anchors to the street and dispersing reporters to protest sites throughout the region.    At the end of the newscast, Dave Walker asked viewers to tune in at 11 to see “the impacts the boycotts are already having on the US economy.â€

But despite the media’s excitement, it was really not that big of deal.

According to a Sacramento City Unified School District spokeswoman, about 2,000 students from the District cut class to protest today.  That may seem like a large number, but when you consider that the district is composed of 52,000 students (nearly a third of whom are Hispanic), it is really not that impressive.

The only businesses that were really hurt by the boycotts were those that decided to shut down for the day.  But if you stayed open, you did just fine.  If anything, businesses may have been helped because they will not have to pay any employees who took the day off today.

Don’t get my wrong, I think the boycotts were certainly newsworthy.  Perhaps even the top story.  But they do not deserve to be covered as if they are the biggest story of the year.

Today’s events provide a great example of two negative traits of the mainstream media: Liberal bias, and over blowing.

Did you notice that CNN, NBC, MSNBC and that crowd called them “immigration rights protestors”, not illegal immigrants or illegal aliens or even undocumented workers? They hyped up the “optimism”, the enthusiasm, the party atmosphere of the protestors who are demanding rights they don’t have. LIkewise the New York Times! What’s new? There was one level head on CNN: Lou Dobbs! They’ll probably fire him for not toting the party line! Last night Larry King cut him off from continuing a very interesting dialogue because it was so important to cut away to a reporter in the “thick of things”. Unfortunately, the reporter had to confess sheepishly that everything had pretty much died down. And why, can any one tell me, do they think it helps their cause to put on these young Hispanic youths (they looked like thugs) telling Bush and the government “what they’d better do”. I predict a backlash. A lot of the sign were obnoxious and anti-American, not to mention Mexican, Cuban, Guatemalan, you name it, national flags. Stand up, America! We’re a nation of legal immigrants and if we’re not going to remain so, you can kiss our country goodbye.
