My Review of my High School Play on Racism

“Black Light” Play
Are all whites really racists?

I sat through a “talk-back” after the play Black Light put on Thursday night by my high school without “talking back” like I usually do because I wanted to see what the audience comments would be. I knew if I said anything, I’d be talked down. Unfortunately, the response by the liberal audience was pretty predictable and I wasn’t surprised, only disheartened. The message seemed to be that Black America is besieged by a dominant white establishment whose goal is to keep black people down. And that all white people are racist (albeit some without knowing it, according to the play). But all of us are and there is “nothing we can do”, according to the “voice over” black man, who condescendingly said that we poor whites just don’t have a clue. When asked why there were no black people in the play, the audience was told “this play is a message to white people”. To show us how racist we are, I presume. I don’t agree and it’s just too easy to buy into this line of thinking. (more…)

Mira Loma and the Day of Silence

Some of you may have heard about the Day of Silence and the related events at Mira Loma High School here in Sacramento, CA. As a student there, I wanted to share the information I have gathered, and then, in a separate post, explain my opinion. In this post, I have tried to be as accurate and unbiased as possible, but if I have faltered in achieving either, please leave a comment.

The Day of Silence, according to the GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), is “an annual opportunity for students to tell their truths about anti-LGBT [Lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender] bullying, violence and harassment.” This Wednesday, April 26, was the Day of Silence at my school, Mira Loma. As I entered school, I saw people wearing shirts like the ones above, or wearing rainbow colors.

California Senate Supports Undermining Own Economy, Schools

The California State Senate has endorced the work and school stoppages by ilegal immigrants on Monday.

For me the big issue is not that the State Senate is supporting illegal immigrants. That is nothing new. The Senate has always been willing to pass things like drivers licences and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

But this takes it to a whole new level. For the first time in my memory at least, a legislative body has advocated the underming of its own economy and school system for the sake of a protest. (more…)

Day of Silence After Report

The tenth annual Day of Silence to protest alleged discrimination against gays and Lesbians was held today in schools throughout the nation. At John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento at least, it was pretty much a bust.

There was a lot of anticipation building up to the event. The Sacramento City Unified School District nearly adopted a resolution telling teachers to change their lesson plans to support the protest. It seemed that officials at the school district expected hundreds, if not thousands, of Kennedy students to join in.

But those officials must have been greatly disappointed. At the meeting before school in the quad where participants received their “supplies” (tape for mouths, cards explaining why they were silent, etc.) there appeared to be maybe 40 or 50 students at the most. That is certainly underwhelming for a school of over 2,200. (more…)

Real Solution to High Gas Prices

California officials are once again fretting about the high price of gas. They have proposed various solutions, including an increase in taxes on oil company profits.

However, no one seems willing to consider another potential solution to the high tax problem here in California: Eliminating the useless environmental regulations that make California gas much more expensive than gas elsewhere.

As renowned scientist Dr. Bill Watsenburg reports: (more…)

Let Marketplace Decide Healthcare

Let the Marketplace Decide About Health Care

The “marketplace” is really people like you and me participating freely in a system of exchange of goods and services. Just like capitalism has no single hand guiding it, so too we can let the marketplace dictate what healthcare system it prefers. Don’t let those central planners from on high try to manipulate a “managed competition” to supposedly benefit all of us who can’t afford health care today. The top-down reforms just don’t work, as we’ve seen already. (more…)

I am Here, so Deal with it!

We’ve entered into a new era in this country where immigration is concerned. Last week’s mass demonstrations of illegal aliens looked like they were conventional protestors with their raised fists, chants and banners. But unlike political protestors of the past, these marchers have no legal basis for their claims! Their argument boils down to this: We’re here, therefore we have a right to the immigration status we desire. This is just the jargon of deconstruction, a legal claim based on nothing!

What will be the result if we let this kind of thinking stand? The rule of law and the end of nation-states. No borders, no illegal immigration, right? The only basis for the illegals’ demands is: I am here, so deal with it! If you take that argumentr to its end, it will end American immigration law and our own sovereignty, because they’re saying that our laws don’t matter. Democratically chosen reasons and priorities for who may enter this country and who not? Out the window! The border no longer exists, and the United States does not have the right to decide who may come across them. (more…)

Open Letter to the President (Wake up, America!)

Dear President Bush: I’m about to plan a little trip with my
family and
extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to
walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a
few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas
and laws.
I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I’m on my
way ?
Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: (more…)

Beggars in Spain

I don’t usually write book reviews for this blog. Mostly because most of the books I read are for school and thus many readers probably would not be interested. But Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress is an exception.

The protagonist in this science fiction novel is a woman named Leisha Camden. Camden, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, is a member of a growing group of individuals genetically modified before birth to require no sleep. The reasoning is that if you need no sleep, you can have more time to study and thus be much more intelligent.

Which turns out to be completely true. Leisha grows up to be one of the most powerful lawyers in the country, and other sleepless become the leaders of nearly every field.

However, this advantage soon leads to resentment by the un-genetically modified population, called sleepers. Rampant hatred of sleepless sweeps the nation, very similar to the attitude towards African Americans in the Southern States after the Civil War. Eventually, the vast majority of the sleepless escape the discrimination by emigrating to an orbital well above the Earth, called Sanctuary. (more…)
